Eerie Drone Footage of an Empty San Francisco During Quarantine
Filmmaker Dan Denegre of Space Race Studio recently shot a short, poignant bit of footage documenting the eerie stillness of San Francisco’s once-bustling streets amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The drone video, captured on March 22nd, documents the results of San Francisco’s recent “shelter in place” order, which prevents people from leaving their homes for anything non-essential. People are still allowed to go get groceries or exercise—assuming they maintain appropriate social distancing—but all non-essential San Francisco businesses have closed and the streets are very nearly empty.
“Driving through San Francisco during the pandemic is jaw dropping,” writes Denegre in the video’s description. “Thankfully few people are outside (I wasn’t even close to a person), but seeing the shops boarded up is tough to see.”
Denegre also mentions that he “made sure the drone wasn’t a nuisance to anyone while shooting.”
Check out the full video up top to see the real-world impact that COVID-19 is having on one of the United States’ largest, and usually busiest, cities. As Denegre says, “this [is a] very weird time in San Francisco.”
